Sony's "Don't Breathe" still rules North American box office over the Labor Day four-day weekend. In its second week, the horror flick starring Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette and Daniel Zovatto is estimated to collect about $19.6 million after earning $15.8 million during the three-day weekend, bringing its domestic total to $51.2 million so far.
" 'Don't Breathe' is a cost-conscious horror movie that checked all the boxes for late-summer audiences looking for good scare in air-conditioned multiplexes and was perfectly timed to take advantage of the typically slow Labor Day weekend," box office analyst for comScore Paul Dergarabedian says. "That was a genius strategy."
The rest of the slow weekend competition consist of holdovers which include "Suicide Squad" and "Sausage Party". The David Ayer-directed antihero movie still lands on the runner-up spot in its fifth week with another $12.8 million to its total cume of about $300 million domestically, while the R-rated animation stays in the fifth place in its fourth week with an estimated $6.5 million.
"Pete's Dragon" and "Kubo and the Two Strings" have swapped places. Earning an estimated $8.6 million, the Disney film moves up to the third place after placing the fourth during the three-day weekend. As for the stop-motion film, it drops to the fourth place with an estimated $8.5 million.
"Families and kids always need entertainment in the summer," Dergarabedian says. "As long as people keep making kids, they'll keep making these PG-rated movies to entertain them."
