Christie Brinkley and John Mellencamp have called it quits after dating for about a year. It was an amicable split. The former Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model, 62, and the "Hurts So Good" singer, 64, promise to keep in touch as friends.

"Both the mileage between their homes and their heavy career demands interfered with their ability to maintain the relationship," they announce their breakup in a joint statement to PEOPLE. "They vowed to remain best of friends."

The couple first met at a Hamptons party last year. At first, she didn't think they're a good match but they quickly bonded over their kids and similar age. "I thought, 'Oh my gosh, we're really opposites. He's kind of a throwback from another time, like a silent cowboy,' " she said in June. "But then we talked and realized that we do have a lot of shared interests."

Christie Brinkley was married fourth time before. Her second husband was rocker Billy Joel and recent marriage was to Peter Cook before they divorced in 2008 after 12 years of marriage. She has three children.

Meanwhile, John Mellencamp was married third time in the past. He split from his third wife Elaine Irwin in 2010 after nearly two decade of marriage. He has five children. Before dating Brinkley, he was in an on-and-off relationship with actress Meg Ryan.
