Warner Bros. Hunts for New 'Godzilla 2' Director as Gareth Edwards Quits
Movie

The director of the successful 2014 monster film left the project reportedly because he wanted to focus on smaller productions.

AceShowbiz - "Godzilla 2" is experiencing another setback. Director Gareth Edwards, who helmed the 2014 monster movie for Legendary and Warner Bros., has quit the sequel but reason of his departure remains a mystery.

The split, according to Deadline, was amicable. There's a rumor floating around that Edwards wants to break away from big-budget movies being shot back-to-back. Sources also told THR that Edwards was concerned about being rushed to meet the deadline.

Edwards was supposed to work on the "Godzilla" sequel after completing "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", which opens in theaters December this year. The latter has a big potential of creating a new franchise, which could take up Edwards' time should he decide to continue with it.

As part of a cinematic monster universe, "Godzilla 2" is a priority for Legendary and WB. The absence of a director means they are on a big hunt for a new one. The project's release date has been delayed nine months from June 8, 2018 to March 22, 2019, but Edwards and Legendary had agreed on his exit before the new date was announced.
