Directed by Albert Magnoli, "Purple Rain" is the only feature film starring Prince that he did not also direct. Prince starred as The Kid, the frontman of the Minneapolis-based band The Revolution who used music as a way to escape the troubles in his personal life. Other stars included Apollonia Kotero, Morris Day and The Time.
MTV aired "Purple Rain" on Thursday, April 21 after airing Prince's music videos. Following his film debut, Prince directed, starred in and composed 1986's "Under the Cherry Moon", the 1987 concert film "Sign o' the Times" and 1990's "Graffiti Bridge", which was a "semi-sequel" to "Purple Rain".
