'Spotlight' and 'Big Short' Win Big at 2016 WGA Awards in Movie

The movie about The Boston Globe's team and the feature film about the financial crisis in 2007-2008 grab the top honors at the Writers Guild of America Awards.

AceShowbiz - The Writers Guild of America picked winners at a ceremony on Saturday, February 13 ahead of the Academy Awards. "Spotlight" and "The Big Short", both Oscar contenders, won best original screenplay and best adapted screenplay respectively at the awards show.

Written by Josh Singer and director Tom McCarthy, "Spotlight" based on a real story follows The Boston Globe's team to uncover sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. It won the top WGA honor, beating "Bridge of Spies", "Sicario", "Straight Outta Compton", and "Trainwreck".

Meanwhile, "The Big Short" is scripted by Charles Randolph and director Adam McKay based on Michael Lewis' book of the same name about the financial crisis in 2007-2008. It grabbed the WGA after pushing aside "The Martian", "Carol", "Steve Jobs", and "Trumbo".

Another winner is "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief". Written by Alex Gibney, the HBO production is awarded best documentary screenplay.
