'Southside with You', a drama about Barack and Michelle Obama's first date, and Wall Street drama 'Equity' are among movies making their world premieres at the festival.

AceShowbiz - The Sundance Institute has announced the lineups for U.S. Dramatic and Documentary Competition as well as the Next slate of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Nate Parker's "The Birth of a Nation", the drama about the rise of ISIS, "Jim", and the romantic drama focusing on Barack and Michelle Obama's love story, "Southside with You", are among movies to make their world premieres at the festival.

Joining "The Birth of a Nation" in U.S. dramatic competition are the drama focusing on the women of Wall Street, "Equity", Jason Lew's crime drama "The Free World" and "Swiss Army Man", a drama starring Daniel Radcliffe about a man who befriends a dead boy and together embark on an "epic journey" to get back home.

Also set to screen in the dramatic competition are "As You Are", "Christine", "The Free World", "Goat", "The Intervention", "Joshy", "Lovesong", "Morris from America", "Other People", "Spa Night", "Tallulah" and "White Girl".

Meanwhile, the genres on the documentary competition vary from psychological thriller and sexual assault film to nature documentary. "Kate Plays Christine", a film centering on Christine Chubbuck, a Florida television host who infamously died by suicide on air in 1974, is one of 16 films premiering in the U.S. documentary competition.

"When we were looking at the films this year, we were drawn to a New Wave, of sorts," Sundance's director John Cooper said. "For independent film, an evolution is happening. We're trying to keep step with this great leap forward."

The 2016 Sundance Film Festival is set to commence on January 21 and run through January 31, 2016 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.
