AceShowbiz - Warner Bros.' "Pan", failed to shine at this weekend's box office as it fell flat, launching to $15.3 million from 3,515 theaters in North America. The movie, which follows the origin story of Peter Pan, can be considered a major loss as it cost $150 million to make but only took in about ten percent of the overall budget in its first weekend.
Overseas, "Pan" earned $25.2 million from 52 markets for a global total of $40.5 million. The film opened two weeks ago in Australia. The only hope to boost its global total is China, where "Pan" will arrive on October 22.
Another movie which had a lackluster performance is Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "The Walk". It brought in $3.7 million in its second weekend, placing seventh in the chart. "We're disappointed. It's a film we are very proud of," Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer said.
Meanwhile, Ridley Scott's "The Martian" remained at the top of the box office with $37 million from 3,854 locations for a domestic total of $108.7 million. The space movie also rocked international box office, adding another $58.1 million from 74 markets for an early foreign total of $119 million and a global total of $227.7 million.
Animated comedy "Hotel Transylvania 2" performed really well in its third weekend, surpassing "Pan" with $20.4 million for a domestic total of $116.9 million. Fourth place went to "The Intern" which brought in $8.7 million for a domestic total of $49.6 million. Rounding out the top five was "Sicario", which added another $7.6 million from 2620 theaters.
