Charlie Hunnam Still Devastated by 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Exit

Two years after letting go of the project for 'Crimson Peak', Hunnam recalled the most heartbreaking moment in his professional life.

AceShowbiz - Charlie Hunnam was still haunted by the fact that he quit "Fifty Shades of Grey". The "Sons of Anarchy" star talked about his decision in late 2013 to walk out of Christian Grey role, calling it "the worst professional experience of my life."

Hunnam showed off his impressive body in the pages of V Man magazine. He also explained the real reason he backed out of the coveted role during the interview. "It was the most emotionally destructive and difficult thing that I've ever had to deal with professionally. It was heartbreaking," he said.

For the umpteenth time, Hunnam said it was not the sexual content of the film that drew him away but rather his commitment to Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak". The 35-year-old actor had to choose between the two films but he already promised del Toro.

"I'd given Guillermo my word, over a year before, that I was going to do this film," he explained. "People were saying, 'Are you crazy? Guillermo still has got four months to recast, it's the fourth lead, you can go and do this [instead].' I said, 'I can't. He's my friend.' "

He recalled the tight schedule he had to endure if he committed himself to "Fifty". He said, "I was going to finish 'Sons' ... fly to Vancouver the next day, have ten days of rehearsal, and then start shooting. Then I was going to have three days after that and I'd have to start shooting 'Crimson Peak' and then I'd have two days to travel and go back into season 7 of 'Sons'."

As much as he's devastated by the decision, Hunnam took pride in himself. "I really, really pride myself on being a professional and a man of keeping my word. It means a lot to me, truly," the actor said. It was telling director Sam Taylor-Johnson that really broke his heart. "I called her and we both cried our eyes out on the phone for 20 minutes," he said. "I needed to tell her that this was not going to work."
