Movie

The 'By the Sea' star/director will executive produce the animated film about a young girl forced to provide for her family in the absence of the father.

The upcoming animated film "The Breadwinner" will have Angelina Jolie's back. The "By the Sea" actress/director is executive producing the movie through her Pas Productions flag.

The animation is based on young adult novel of the same title, written by Deborah Ellis. It follows a young girl named Parvana who lives under Taliban regime in Afghanistan. When her father is imprisoned for not being educated in Afghan, Parvana has to be her family's breadwinner and disguises herself as a boy.

"Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict, and helping their families to survive in those conditions. This story is a reminder of the immense value of their contribution," Jolie said in a statement. "I am delighted to be working with a talented team of artists who I know will do justice to the richness, creativity and strength of Afghan culture and to little girls like Parvana."

The story will also highlight the beauty and culture of Afghan besides the oppression. A portion of the film will be made in Dari, a modern variety of Persian language spoken in Afghanistan, as well as English.

"The Secret of Kells" co-director Nora Twomey is directing from Anita Doron's screenplay. Casting and pre-production are underway with the aim to start production this month and a premiere in early 2017.
