Jenson Button and his wife, Jessica Michibata, fell victims to robbery. The 2009 Formula One world champion, 35, and his spouse were robbed when they were staying at a rented home during a holiday at Saint-Tropez in the South of France.

The thieves reportedly broke into the property after knocking the couple out with anesthetic gas through the air conditioning system. Jessica's engagement ring was among the missing items. Police are investigating the robbery.

"Two men broke into the property whilst they all slept and stole a number of items of jewelry including, most upsettingly, Jessica's engagement ring," Button's spokesman told the BBC. "The police have indicated that this has become a growing problem in the region with perpetrators going so far as to gas their proposed victims through the air conditioning units before breaking in."
