Miguel on Frank Ocean Rivalry: I Make Better Music Than Him

The 'Adorn' singer blames his negative comments about the Odd Future affiliate on his competitiveness in a statement he posted following backlash from fans.

Miguel definitely still thinks that Frank Ocean didn't deserve the Best Urban Contemporary Album Award at the 2013 Grammys. The R&B star, who was among other nominees vying for the prize, confidently claimed he's better than the Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All affiliate while he talked about comparisons to his peers in an interview with the U.K.'s Sunday Times.

"We're, er, cordial. I wouldn't say [Ocean and I] were friends," said Miguel, who famously refused to give Ocean a standing ovation after his acclaimed "Kaleidoscope Dream" lost the Best Urban Contemporary Album title to Ocean's "Channel Orange".

"To be completely honest - and no disrespect to anyone - I genuinely believe that I make better music, all the way around," he continued. "It's interesting, but we'll see who's in it for the long haul. It's like a marathon, you know?"

Miguel's negative comments about Ocean understandably drew criticism from some fans. The singer later tried to clear the air by posting a message on Twitter, blaming his remarks on his competitiveness.

"Yes, I am competitive, we ALL have to have a level of competitiveness to put ourselves on the line day in and day out. But I also believe there's room for all artists," he wrote. "That's what 'Wildheart' is all about: celebrating individuality."

"I guess what I'm saying is, there's no need to compare apples to oranges, there's something out there for everyone. That's why I'm her and I'm able to do what I do," he added.
