Joel McHale is booked to host this year's Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) Awards. ESPN announces the "Community" star will serve as an emcee for the annual event which will telecast live on ABC July 15 from Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

"I'm thrilled to be hosting The ESPYS. Just ecstatic," the 43-year-old actor said before jokingly adding, "After my stunning victory in the Iditarod this year by only using six Bichon Frises and a lamb, I think the sports world saw me as the logical host."

McHale is a sports fan and former athlete. He was on the University of Washington's football team for over a year after originally being recruited for the school's rowing program.

Last year, McHale hosted White House Correspondents' Dinner. In taking the hosting job at the ESPYs, he follows in the footsteps of Drake, Jon Hamm, Seth Meyers, Samuel L. Jackson, and Justin Timberlake.
