'Supergirl' Officially Gets Series Order From CBS

The female superhero TV series led by Melissa Benoist is officially added to CBS' 2015-2016 lineup after it lands series order from the network.

AceShowbiz - "Supergirl" is ordered to series by CBS. The new show based on DC Comic superhero is officially picked up for the 2015-2016 TV season. "Glee" star Melissa Benoist is tapped to play the titular heroine. No premiere date has been announced.

"Supergirl" tells the story of Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El, who also lands on Earth after escaping Krypton. She's been hiding the powers she shares with Superman, but later decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.

Calista Flockhart stars as Kara's boss Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as Kara's love interest Jimmy Olsen, Laura Benanti as her birth mother Alura Zor-El, Chyler Leigh as Kara's foster sister Alex Danvers, and Owain Yeoman as villainous Vartox.

Dean Cain who played Superman on "Lois & Clark" and Helen Slater who took on the role of Kara in the 1984 film are cast in undisclosed roles. The two previously starred together on the renewed Superman series "Smallville" with Slater portraying Clark's Krypton mother Lara and Cain playing the immortal Dr. Curtis Knox.
