Katy Perry's Outfit at Taipei Concert Draws Political Controversy

Donning a sunflower-studded dress and a cape that looked exactly the same as the controversial Taiwan flag, the singer seemingly showed her support for Taiwan's full independence.

AceShowbiz - Katy Perry's latest concert outfit sparked a controversy. Wearing a dress covered with sunflowers and controversial Taiwan flag as a cape during her Taipei concert on Tuesday, April 28, the singer of "Firework" might have made a political statement over conflict between China and Taiwan.

Some countries believe that Taiwan is an independent nation. However, according to People's Republic of China's policy, Taiwan is a part of China. Some other countries including the United States also formally adopt the "One China" policy.

Wearing the outfit, Perry was said of supporting Taiwan's full independence. While the controversial flag represents a political symbol for an independent Taiwan, the sunflower dress was claimed to be a symbol of Taiwan's 2014 Sunflower Student Movement. The movement was meant to protest a trade deal between China and Taiwan.

Perry's apparent political stance touched some concertgoers. They took to social media to express their gratitude to the songtress.

However, some said that the singer of "The One That Got Away" might not have intentionally made the political statement. "I don't even know how to speak Mandarin," Perry said to the audience ahead of the concert. "That's what you speak, right?" In addition, Perry wore the specific sunflower dress during her "Prismatic" tour.

Regarding the fact whether Perry intentionally wore the political imagery or simply honored the audience, both the singer and her representative have not commented yet.
