Katy Perry Didn't Pay for Super Bowl Performance, Says She's Perfect for the Gig

With empowering songs like 'Roar' and 'Fireworks', the pop star hopes she can 'bring that incredible strength and empowerment to people through the performance.'

AceShowbiz - Last year before Katy Perry was officially announced as the headliner for the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show, news broke saying the NFL wanted acts in contention to pay for the coveted gig. The idea prompted criticism from many people including the singer herself. "I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl," she said at that time.

Perry was then announced as the official headliner in October. For those who are still wondering how much money she's spent on it, the "Roar" hitmaker has made it clear in a new interview that she's never agreed with the pay-to-play concept.

"I put my foot down very early in the courtship. I said, 'Look guys, here's where I draw a line in the sand,' " she said. "I want to be invited on my own merits and not with some fine print. I stuck to my position ... I don't even care if my contract leaks. ... I have nothing to hide, basically."

In the interview, Perry also explained why she'd make a perfect Super Bowl performer following recent domestic violence cases involving NFL stars, including Ray Rice who assaulted his then-fiance Janay last year.

"I'm all about female empowerment and uplifting people's spirits, and people finding their own voice with songs like 'Roar' and 'Firework' so maybe there is no better person," she continued. "Hopefully I can bring that incredible strength and empowerment to people through the performance."

This year's big game will be broadcast on February 1 from the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Perry will play a mash-up of her hits during her 12-minute set. Some special guests including Lenny Kravitz are set to join her onstage.
