"Boston Strong", a movie based on the Boston Marathon bombing, is eying "Safe House" director Daniel Espinosa to helm. In addition, 20th Century Fox has picked up the screenplay from "The Fighter" writing duo Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy.

The film is based on a book of the same name by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge about the Patriot Day bombing in 2013 that left three dead and many wounded. The rights to the book were optioned in the summer of 2013. It was first opted for a miniseries but the plan fell apart this summer and the project was later developed as a movie.

"Boston Strong" follows the massive manhunt to apprehend the two men believed to be responsible for the bombing. It also examines the city's reaction following the event. Casey Affleck, a Boston native, was touted to play a role and produce the movie but sources said he could not reach a deal and is no longer involved. Dorothy Aufiero is now producing with Hutch Parker.

Espinosa is finishing up "Child 44" for Summit Entertainment.
