It's unlikely for Will Smith to reprise his role in "Independence Day 2", but it's another story for his on-screen sidekick Jeff Goldblum. Speaking to TIME, the actor who plays computer expert David Levinson in the original movie confirms he's in discussions for the sequel.
"I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer," he says, "and they've been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon."
Stressing that it's "nebulous until actually" happens, Goldblum adds, "But yeah, they're still talking about it and I've heard recent rumblings here and there about it, and 'Oh, there's a scripting coming in' - maybe last weekend there was a script handed in, so it's brewing."
There is no official word on why the "After Earth" actor turned down the sequel, but rumor suggested it's difficult to bring him back due to budget issues. Emmerich himself said tackling the project was "a daily battle." "The budget, the schedules, the actors ...," he uttered.
The second "Independence Day" movie was initially set for July 3, 2015, but has now been moved back to July 1, 2016.
