The former 'Heroes' star returns to the network with miniseries 'The Slap' about the fallout of a man slapping another couple's misbehaving child.

AceShowbiz - Zachary Quinto commits to "The Slap". The "Heroes" alum has signed up to star on the NBC provocative miniseries about what happens after a man slapping another couple's misbehaving child at a family barbeque. It is based on a novel by Australian author Christos Tsiolkas that has been adapted into a critically acclaimed Australian miniseries of the same name.

The Spock of "Star Trek" and its 2013 sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness" will portray Harry, the slapper. He is described as a married father with a 15-year-old son who works as a mechanic/dealer specializing in expensive European automobiles, and lives with his family in a Brooklyn loft. Perennially angry but seemingly pleased with his life, Harry is a staunch believer in family and loyalty and never shies from picking a fight. However, Harry picks on the wrong guy when he slaps the horribly misbehaving child of another couple.

The eight-episode complex family drama has also tapped Emmy winner Brian Cox to play Manolis, the bearded patriarch of the family, a stern yet magnanimous man. He is the "peacemaker in the family, quick to defray any tension. He's a strong man with old world values, good-hearted and clearly devoted to his family."

The two join the previously cast Peter Sarsgaard and Mary-Louise Parker. Jon Robin Baitz penned the script and will executive produce the miniseries along with Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, Ted Gold and Tony Ayres. No premiere date has been set yet.

The gig brings Quinto back to NBC since the network canceled "Heroes" on which he portrayed Sylar. The 37-year-old later starred in the first two installments of Ryan Murphy's anthology series "American Horror Story" which earned him an Emmy nomination in 2013.
