The 67th Cannes Film Festival will see a range of cinema experts from around the world on the jury panel. American filmmaker Sofia Coppola joins British actor Willem Dafoe, South Korean actress Jeon Do-yeon, Iranian actress Leila Hatami and French actor Carole Bouquet among others to anchor the main competition at the annual event.

"Cannes has always sought to adopt a universal and international approach, and in tune with this tradition, Campion will be surrounded by eight luminaries of world cinema, from China, Korea, Denmark, Iran, the United States, France and Mexico," the Festival said in a statement. The Fest's director Thierry Fremaux recently got under fire for the number of female directors selected for Cannes.

The jury now consists of five women and four men with NZ director Jane Campion serving as Jury president. The rest of the jury members are Chinese director Jia Zhangke, Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal and filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn.

The Cannes Film Festival kicks off May 14 with "Grace of Monaco" opening the night. The jury will judge around 20 films this year including Tommy Lee Jones' "The Homesman" and Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher".
