A new writer has been hired to write a follow-up to 2012's box office surprise "Chronicle". Jack Stanley, who landed on the coveted 2013 Black List with his spec script "Sweetheart", is tapped to take over the job from Max Landis, the screenwriter of the original movie.

Landis was initially attached to return for the sequel, but he later dropped out of the project due to creative differences with Fox. His plan to take the second movie to a darker direction made the studio uneasy. "It's a bummer, but there are no real hard feelings," he once said.

The original movie came from a relatively-unknown crew back then. Josh Trank served as a director, while Michael B. Jordan, Dane DeHaan, and Alex Russell played the lead roles. It got positive reviews and collected over $126 million against a budget of only $12M.

Trank is currently busy working on a reboot of "The Fantastic Four" where Jordan is among the main cast as well. DeHaan has also boarded a superhero franchise, playing Harry Osborn or Goblin in Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2".
