Major Detail of Benedict Cumberbatch's 'Star Trek' Villain Uncovered
Movie

Stirring an online frenzy, an official caption from the new still of 'Star Trek Into Darkness' has unveiled the name of the much-talked-about villainous character.

AceShowbiz - The mystery surrounding Benedict Cumberbatch's villainous character in "Star Trek Into Darkness" begins to unravel slowly. On Tuesday, December 10, a brand new still of the highly-anticipated movie has been released, featuring the much-talked-about bad guy character, Kirk and Spock. Along with the caption of the image, Paramount Pictures unveils a potential big hint at the identity of the mysterious villain. The studio reveals the name of the character.

The picture shows Cumberbatch being locked in a holding cell, while Chris Pine's Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock are watching him from outside. The revealing caption from Paramount reads, "(Left to right) Zachary Quinto is Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch is John Harrison and Chris Pine is Kirk in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS from Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions."

The revelation quickly stirs online frenzy as fans are driven to guess who John Harrison really is. Apparently Harrison is not a canon character in the "Star Trek" franchise, unlike Khan Noonien Singh or Garry Mitchell. Many fans speculate that Harrison is just an alias that is used to hide the real identity of the villain. The same strategy was used when Marion Cotillard claimed she would play an all-new character called Miranda Tate, who turned out to be a major villain in "The Dark Knight Rises".

Whoever the supervillain is, Cumberbatch recently stated that his character "is very ruthless... He is not a clearly good or evil character." He continued teasing, "He is a villain but the actions he takes has intent and reason."

"He is a complicated character not to be judged by white-or-black, or good-or-evil. But this is the appeal of J.J. [Abrams]'s works and I felt challenged as an actor," said the Dragon Smaug depicter in "The Hobbit" trilogy.

J.J. Abrams weighed in, "The character is a villain and scary, but I was looking for an actor with humanity who audiences can sympathies with. When I saw Benedict in Sherlock, I wanted to convince him whatever it took. I expected a lot from him, but Benedict responded by acting beyond my expectations."

The "Star Trek" sequel will arrive in cinemas Stateside on May 17, 2013.
