Beside Ian McKellen who is set to reprise his role as Gandalf, there are two depicters of elf characters who may return for the upcoming adventure film.

AceShowbiz - Peter Jackson keeps spilling some details on "The Hobbit". Most recently, the filmmaker had an interview with MTV, during which he revealed that there are three "Lord of the Rings" actors who will be seen returning for the upcoming adventure movie.
Among three stars is Ian McKellen, who has previously been confirmed to reprise his role as Gandalf. "Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in 'The Hobbit,' and we're having Ian McKellen reprise," Jackson shared.
The two other actors who may also have parts in "The Hobbit" include Hugo Weaving and Cate Blanchett. "There's a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films]," Jackson said, before adding "and there's a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett."
Jackson then offered a reason why there won't be many "Lord of the Rings" actors among the cast of the upcoming film, saying "In some respects, it's a prequel. In book terms, the world of 'The Hobbit' takes place 60 years before 'The Lord of the Rings', as it was written by [J.R.R.] Tolkien. So, not a lot of the characters actually feature, because they weren't around yet." As for Galadriel and Elrond, he claimed, "They are elves, so once again, in the realm of Middle-earth, they're immortal, they don't age."
In the meantime, casting for "The Hobbit", begins this week. Jackson has previously informed that casting directors have been auditioning "unknown actors" for the role of Bilbo Baggins. Additionally, there was report that Tom Waits has been seriously considered by the production to take the major role.
"The Hobbit" will re-create the scenes of the novel, with additional events that make an impact to "The Lords of the Rings", such as the expulsion of Sauron from Mirkwood by The White Council. The first of the adventure fantasy movie is scheduled for December 2011 U.S. release, while the second film is expected to hit theaters a year later.
