'American Idol' Eight Season Premiere Recap: Bikini Girl and Blind Talent
TV

The new chapter of 'American Idol' still cannot escape the eccentricities and surprises from the first audition round.

The Idol fever has roamed once again with the eight season premiere of "American Idol" on Tuesday, January 13. Changing in its format and judges panel, the show delivers still the best and the worst in the audition rounds. First stop, Phoenix, Arizona, where the hot weather sends a girl auditioning in a bikini.

Katrina Darrell thought that she will make a difference to the show, appearing only in two-piece. Her vocal was not a favorite to the new judge, Kara DioGuardi, but her charm apparently put her through, thanks to two thumbs up from Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell. Unhappy DioGuardi said, "Next time come naked" upon her exit from the room. Darrell, who promised to "make out" with host Ryan Seacrest if she got through, then ran to find him and made it true, much to Ryan's shock.

The first day audition also brought daylight with the promising talents of an oil rig roughneck named Michael Sarver, a punk chic with pink hair named Emily Hughes who is ready to leave her band if she got through, and a blind 23-year-old named Scott MacIntyre who impressed with Billy Joel's "And So it Goes".

Cowell, the acid tongue judge, also managed to spit out his infamous remarks during the audition. When a man dressed very much like Axl Rose came in, blew his audition and dropped his tears, Cowell said, "You're coming over as a drama queen. I don't think you've got star quality and I don't think you ever will." He also let out phrases like "That was like something out of a horror movie", "It's like a morning when the smoke alarm goes off" and "It's like you were in pain or something."

The second audition will be conducted in Kansas City, Missouri. FOX will broadcast the segment tonight at 8/7c. Schedule for the next few weeks of the program can be found here.
