The 59th Berlin International Film Festival has found its opening night movie. In a press release outed on Friday, November 28, it has been revealed that British-German co-production "The International" will kick off the festival with its world premiere on February 5, 2009.

Though being the opening movie, this conspiracy thriller starring Clive Owen and Naomi Watts will be screened out-of-competition in the Competition program of the festival which is also known as Berlinale. This will be director Tom Tykwer's second movie to open Berlinale following Cate Blanchett-starrer "Heaven" in 2002.

"The International" centers on Interpol Agent Louis Salinger and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman in uncovering the money laundering and illegal arms trading done by one of the world's most powerful banks. Following the money from Berlin to Milan to New York to Istanbul, the two soon find themselves putting their lives at stakes to bring justice. Columbia Pictures will distribute this movie to U.S. theaters on February 13, 2009.

59th Berlinale runs February 5, 2009 to February 15, 2009. Earlier, it has been announced that British actress Tilda Swinton has been chosen to be the president of the festival jury. The previous Berlinale was opened by Martin Scorsese's documentary about The Rolling Stones, "Shine a Light".
