In this sharp and poignant family drama from writer-director Noah Baumbach, the fractured Meyerowitz clan gathers in New York City, forcing long-simmering tensions to the surface. The story centers on three adult siblings: the perpetually overlooked and frustrated Danny, played by Adam Sandler; his successful but emotionally distant brother Matthew, portrayed by Ben Stiller; and their half-sister Jean, brought to life by Elizabeth Marvel. Their lives remain perpetually in the shadow of their aging, self-absorbed father Harold, a sculptor of modest renown embodied by Dustin Hoffman. As Harold’s health declines, old rivalries, unspoken resentments, and the desperate need for paternal approval collide. With a stellar supporting cast including Emma Thompson as Harold’s current wife and Grace Van Patten as Danny’s artistically inclined daughter, the film masterfully blends wry comedy with raw emotional truth. It paints a bittersweet portrait of adult children grappling with their shared history, their individual failures, and the complex, often maddening, bonds of family.
