Michael Anthony Thomas Charles Hall, known professionally as Anthony Michael Hall, is an American actor whose career has spanned more than four decades and encompassed some of the most defining films of the 1980s, a stint on late-night sketch comedy, and a later resurgence in television and film. Born on April 14, 1968, in Boston, Massachusetts, Hall grew up in a family that moved frequently before settling in New York, where he began performing as a child. His early exposure to the entertainment industry set the stage for a remarkably enduring career that has repeatedly reinvented itself across generations.

Hall made his film debut in Six Pack in 1982, followed by a supporting role as Russell "Rusty" Griswold in National Lampoon's Vacation in 1983. His breakout came through a string of collaborations with writer-director John Hughes, who cast him in three iconic coming-of-age films: Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Weird Science. These roles made him a defining face of 1980s youth cinema, and mainstream media grouped him with a cohort of young actors known as the "Brat Pack," a label tied to his association with those films.

Eager to avoid being typecast as his geek persona, Hall diversified his roles. He joined the cast of Saturday Night Live for the 1985–1986 season, becoming one of the youngest regular performers in the show's history at the time. He continued to build a varied filmography with projects such as Out of Bounds in 1986, Johnny Be Good in 1988, and Edward Scissorhands in 1990, the latter directed by Tim Burton.

The 1990s brought a stretch of mostly minor roles, but Hall found steady work in television. He starred as "Shorty" Lattimore on the USA Network sitcom Claude's Crib in 1997 and earned acclaim for his portrayal of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in the television film Pirates of Silicon Valley in 1999. A major career resurgence arrived with the lead role in the USA Network science fiction series The Dead Zone, which ran from 2002 to 2007 and introduced him to a new generation of viewers. He followed that with a supporting role in the superhero blockbuster The Dark Knight in 2008, directed by Christopher Nolan.

In the 2010s and 2020s, Hall remained prolific, appearing in films including Results in 2015, War Machine in 2017, Bodied in 2017, Halloween Kills in 2021, and Trigger Warning in 2024. He also took on a main role in the third season of the Amazon Prime Video series Reacher in 2025, further cementing his status as a durable and versatile presence in Hollywood.
