It's 120 degrees and all of Dillon is cooling off at the municipal pool. While hanging with Landry, Saracen spies Julie checking out "the Swede," a fellow lifeguard. Landry hopes to make the team, thinking Tyra will see him in a new light. Smash stops by to tell Saracen to hang onto his coattails this year.

Trying to beat the heat, hugely pregnant Tami shows up at the pool against Julie's wishes. Julie thinks Tami's spying on her, and Tami admits to being curious about the Swede. Tami's water then breaks in the pool. Luckily, Coach Taylor, who is now coaching college football in Austin, makes it to the hospital in time to witness the birth of baby Grace.

Taylor and Tami bring Grace home to a trashed house. Julie didn't clean up like she promised, and didn't take off work for her sister's first day at home. Tami tells Taylor that Julie is dating Matt, and flirting with the Swede, making him wonder what he's been missing. At the pool, the Swede asks Julie to come see his band Thursday night.

Tyra thinks football is a terrible idea for Landry, but he thinks making the team will make his dad love him more. Meanwhile, Lyla is baptized in the river by the religious group she has been spending time with. Riggins is buying beer and trying to pick up girls in the parking lot when he spies Lyla handing out flyers for "Christ Teen Messengers." She criticizes him for spending his summer sleeping with half the town, but he tells her she's still the best he ever had.

Taylor bumps into Saracen at the grocery store and asks why he hasn't come by to see the baby. Saracen explains that Coach MacGregor is taking apart everything that Taylor put together, redesigning the team around Smash, who he's made the only captain. Back at home, Taylor asks Julia about the Swede, but she puts him off by sayinng he's a hypocrite for coming home after eight months in Austin and trying to have a deep conversation.

Landry makes the team and gets walloped in practice. Coach MacGregor, aka The Tennessee Tyrant, spies Buddy at a practice, and orders Mac to kick him out. Buddy gets irate - does MacGregor know who pays his salary?! On the field, MacGregor lays into Riggins, calling him a miserable player with no heart. Riggins whips his helmet off and hands it over - MacGregor can find another fullback to play opening day.

Saracen runs into Julie at the grocery store, and it's awkward. He asks her to come to a big football party at the lake on Thursday, but she prefers to stay home and read. He pleads that all the players will have their girls there, and he doesn't want to lose her, so she relents, saying she'll try to make it.

Taylor breaks some bad news to his wife - even though he's supposed to get two weeks off, the head coach wants him back on Friday. Tami's face cracks, and Taylor pleads with her to talk, but she remains silent, breaking down as Taylor grabs the car keys and splits. Meanwhile Lyla has dinner with her family, now including Pam's new hippy boyfriend, soccer coach Kevin. Saying grace over a vegetarian casserole, Lyla thanks God for men that don't take advantage of recently separated women.

Taylor finds Buddy drinking scotch and living at the dealership, depressed that the Tennessee hillbilly locked him out of practice. Pam shows up to scold Buddy for showing up at soccer practice and he accuses her of turning the kids into Communists. When he spies Kevin in the parking lot, Buddy tries to violently pulls him out of the car. Taylor intervenes and Kevin drives off with Pam, flashing a peace sign.

Street visits MacGregor to explain that leaning on Riggins will yield no results. MacGregor tells Street to choose: he can be the team's mascot or its coach. If he wants to coach, he can't be friends with the team. Tyra calls Landry to investigate a scary noise, which turns out to be a skunk. Later, Landry calls Saracen from the bathroom asking how he should approach touching Tyra. Saracen's bummed - Julie didn't come to the party. Landry's attempt to get an arm around Tyra is thrwarted when she suggests getting something to eat.

Julie is enthralled with the Swede's music. After the show, his girlfriend introduces herself before dragging him off to a party. Depressed and embarrassed, Julie calls Taylor to pick her up. She already knows she's grounded. Taylor asks what's wrong with dating Saracen? Julie confesses: even though they're the perfect couple, she doesn't want to turn out like her parents there has to be more to life.

Tyra sends Landry in to a local mart get the food, and hangs in the parking lot. Suddenly, the guy who tried to rape her accosts her. When Landry exits the store, there's a physical struggle going on, so he rushes to defend Tyra. The guy backs away, but Landry goes ballistic and and slams him repeatedly on the head with a bottle. When they see that he's dead, they toss the body over a bridge and into the river below.
