In New York, Doll and Em get to work on their play. They meet with Hollywood actors Olivia Wilde and Evan Rachel Wood who are interested in starring as Em and Doll. Their performances are rudely dismissed by Doll, who's angry with Em for not wanting to be in the play anymore.

Backstage, Doll confronts Emily about auditioning other people to play their roles in 'Joanne's Gift,' because she'd rather do the big budget 'Space Pilgrim' movie instead. Seeing the tension between the two, Mikhail Baryshnikov, the theater's artistic director, privately confers with Emily in Russian. He thinks Dolly is unstable, and tells Em that following through with the play just because she feels guilty is a terrible reason to continue with the project. Furthermore, Evan and Olivia were put off by the "chaotic" and "weird energy" Emily and Dolly gave off, so they've decided against being in the play.

That night, the women apologize to each other about their bad behavior. Doll promises Em that she'll do "all the heavy lifting" so that Emily is free to star in 'Space Pilgrim.' They agree to do what they can to persuade Olivia and Evan to rejoin their play, which results in a dinner for the four of them at Em's house the following night.

Before the dinner, Doll picks up Emily's daughter April from school. They stop so Doll can buy an antique mirror from a man having a stoop sale; Doll doesn't have enough cash so she runs to an ATM, leaving April behind. She forgets April and the cash when Em calls in a tizzy and tells her that Olivia and Evan have arrived.

The dinner is awkward but pleasant; Olivia mistakes Doll and Em for a couple, then decides she's most interested in playing Emily in 'Joanne's Gift,' making both Dolly and Evan uncomfortable, as they haven't gotten off on the right foot. While Em and Doll clear the plates, they listen as the two young women discuss the challenges of playing older women for the first time, unaware of how offensive they're being.
