Reunited best friends Dolly Wells and Emily Mortimer sequester themselves in a remote lighthouse, where they collaborate on a semi-autobiographical script they hope will take Broadway -- or at least off-Broadway -- by storm. Writing their play, 'Joanne's Gift', turns out to be the easiest part of the process. The two friends head to New York, where they pitch the script to Harvey Weinstein. In addition to forgetting a copy of the play, neither Emily nor Dolly can quite explain to Harvey what it's about. They leave the theater without a producer.

That night, Emily receives a home delivery: a script for a big budget sci-fi movie, 'Space Pilgrim', from a first time director. Emily scoffs at the fact that a completely inexperienced man is helming the film. "If they're letting this Belgian dude direct a 16 million dollar film, then why can't we direct our own play?" she asks Doll. All they need is a producer who likes them to find them a theater, so they pitch the idea to Emily's producer friend Buddy -- who just happens to be in love with Doll.

Buddy, thrilled that Dolly and Emily are working together again, brings them to a theater where his godfather, Mikhail Baryshnikov, is the artistic director. Emily charms Mikhail by speaking Russian with him, though Dolly is annoyed with Emily for excluding her from the conversation.

Back at Emily's house in Brooklyn, Doll searches the cupboards for a late night snack. She uncovers a basket of English treats with a note from Em welcoming her to New York. On her way upstairs to thank Emily, Doll overhears her friend on the phone, bubbling with excitement over 'Joanne's Gift'. The conversation soon turns to 'Space Pilgrim'; Emily is thrilled to learn she's been specifically requested for the starring role. Unfortunately, accepting the role means she won't be able to do the play with Doll -- meaning that once again Doll will take the back seat in her friend's life.
