When Andrew learns Charlotte's romantic, she's inspired to tell another story. Charlotte and Leslie are planning Tim's parents' anniversary party. Charlotte's smitten with the story of how his parents met. After Tim leaves, Leslie tries to teach Charlotte how to give out the right signals to attract a man.

Charlotte wants to date Tim, but feels it has to be in a spontaneous, romantic way. Charlotte asks her friends for suggestions about romantic situations to no avail. Jill asks Wayne to pretend to be a fireman for her kindergarten class' career day. Leslie proves Mike's scared of everything by placing a rubber spider on the table. Apparently, Mike's been trying to scare Leslie since the third grade, but it's never worked.

Charlotte plans to go to the park where Tim runs and pretend to read "Pride and Prejudice." She'll drop the book and "spontaneously" bump into him. Later that day, Mike hides in Leslie's shower and gets an unpleasant surprise: Leslie's grandmother is naked and ready to take a shower.

Wayne pretends to be a firefighter for Jill's class and gets called out as an imposter by one of the kids. Wayne comes clean, admitting he doesn't have a job, sleeps on the couch, and watches television all day. The kids love Wayne's life. In the park, Charlotte's attempt to meet Tim doesn't work, and she doesn't even notice when another man falls into her romantic trap.

Charlotte's next ploy to woo Tim involves inviting him over while she's in a towel and pretend he's caught her right out of the shower. However, when Charlotte opens the door, it's a delivery guy who thinks he's been hired to have sex with her. Tim shows up, blowing Charlotte's plan out of the water. Mike comes in pretending he's been shot in hopes of scaring Leslie, but she's not there.

Charlotte finally tells Tim the truth about her schemes to get him to notice her. Tim apologizes. He's been distracted with his ex-wife and his parents' anniversary, but he's got an idea. Why not get a car and drive until it runs out of gas, just like his parents did when they first met? Charlotte jumps at this chance and arranges to borrow Leslie's car.

Fearing her students don't want to pursue a career at all, Jill asks Wayne to come back and show the kids he can do something. Wayne likes to draw, so he and Jill proceed to the classroom to draw a picture for the next day. Leslie rushes to order a bunch of martinis before happy hour ends, then realizes she'll have to start drinking them alone.

Charlotte and Tim run out of gas in the middle of suburbia and start making out in front of a house. Tim keeps honking the horn while he kisses Charlotte, which wakes up someone - his ex-wife, Vicky. Turns out Tim just wanted to make Vicky jealous. Lucky for Charlotte, Mike has been hiding in the back seat of Leslie's car. Mike drives Charlotte back to the city, leaving Tim to fight with his ex-wife's new husband.

While in Jill's classroom, Wayne paints an impressive picture, which prompts his decision to be an artist. Back at the bar, Charlotte tells everyone that Tim's crazy. Leslie's super drunk, so Mike decides to take advantage of the opportunity to finally scare her. In the morning, Leslie wakes up with Mike in her bed; he lets her believe they've had sex.

Later that night, Mike searches his apartment for Leslie because he knows she's there hiding, trying to scare him. Wayne thinks Mike's being paranoid, but Mike knows Leslie can hide anywhere. To prove his point, he bangs on the piano keys, revealing Leslie, hiding in the piano.
