ABBA Stars Suing Political Party for Using 'Mamma Mia'
Music

'ABBA never allows its music to be used in a political context,' said Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus after finding out Danish People's Party had used it without permission.

AceShowbiz - ABBA stars Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are taking legal action to stop a controversial Danish political party using their hit song "Mamma Mia". The Swedish musicians have filed suit against executives at far-right group the Danish People's Party (DF), who have allegedly been playing the 1975 track at rallies.

The youth wing of the party is also said to have used the song and changed the lyrics to "Mamma Pia", in honor of party leader Pia Kjaersgaard. Andersson claims he found out about the alleged infringement when he was contacted by a rival party and he is now consulting lawyers in a bid to make sure the song is not used for political purposes.

He says, "Firstly, you cannot just rewrite songs as you like and secondly we want them to understand that we have absolutely no interest in supporting their party. ABBA never allows its music to be used in a political context. This is something that we have pointed out to the Danish People's Party."

Other acts to have complained about political parties using their music include Canadian rockers Rush and Eagles star Don Henley, who won a major legal battle with a California politician who used two of his songs as campaign anthems without permission.
