AceShowbiz - Rebel Wilson is making her long-awaited directorial debut with the musical comedy The Deb, which is set to be released on digital platforms in North America and the UK this August. The film, which premiered as the Closing Night Gala of the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, will be available on major US digital platforms on August 25 via Sunrise Films and in the UK on August 24 via Vertigo Releasing.

The Deb follows Taylah Simpkins, a lovable farm girl and high school outcast played by Natalie Abbott, who believes the upcoming Debutante Ball — “the Deb” — is her one chance to reinvent herself. When her sharp-tongued city cousin Maeve, portrayed by Charlotte MacInnes, is exiled to Taylah’s drought-stricken town of Dunburn, she dismisses the ball as a “heteronormative shit-show.” As the two cousins clash and reluctantly team up, they discover that the path to the spotlight runs through the messy truth of who they really are.

The film features a standout ensemble cast including emerging actor and singer Stevie Jean, Tara Morice of Strictly Ballroom fame, actor and writer Steph Tisdell, award-winning actor Shane Jacobson, and Wilson herself in a scene-stealing supporting role as the town’s villainous hairdresser Janette. The Deb is based on the acclaimed stage musical by Hannah Reilly, with original songs by Meg Washington and choreography by Emmy winner Rob Ashford, known for his work on Thoroughly Modern Millie and Evita.

Wilson, who rose to international fame as Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect trilogy, has long been a force in comedy. Her memoir Rebel Rising became a New York Times, Sunday Times, and Australian best-seller. The Deb originated from Wilson’s annual scholarship program at the Australian Theatre for Young People, where she is a patron. The inaugural production at the theatre’s Rebel Theatre was a workshop of The Deb, which Wilson has now turned into a feature film. She also co-wrote and produced the film and contributed as a songwriter.

For Abbott, The Deb marks her feature film debut. The performer, hailing from Yuin country, was nominated for a Helpmann Award for her role in Muriel’s Wedding the Musical and has appeared in the ABC series Aftertaste. MacInnes, a WAAPA graduate, made her professional debut in the stage production of The Deb and has since appeared in the mystery drama North Shore. Stevie Jean, an emerging actor and singer from the Northern Territory, has earned a nomination for Triple J’s Unearthed High competition and won the Northern Territory Music Award for Rock Song of the Year in 2022.

The Deb is a co-production between AI Film, Unigram, Bunya Productions, and Camp Sugar. Producers include Gregor Cameron, Amanda Ghost, Wilson, David Jowsey, and Greer Simpkin. Executive producers are Len Blavatnik, Vince Holden, Meg Washington, Hannah Reilly, and Kevin Whyte, with Matt Reeder co-producing. The film was shot on location in New South Wales with support from Screen NSW’s Made in NSW fund and the Producer Offset administered by Screen Australia.

Described as a celebration of self-acceptance, small-town Australia, and the transformative power of a sequined gown, The Deb is in the tradition of Muriel’s Wedding and Strictly Ballroom. With its outrageously funny, foul-mouthed earworm songs and wildly inventive choreography, the film is a distinctly Australian story with universal heart. Wilson will next be seen in the action comedy Bride Hard alongside recent Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, directed by Simon West.
