Andy Serkis’ animated Animal Farm adaptation debuts to negative reviews, failing to capture Orwell’s classic allegory despite a star voice cast.

AceShowbiz - Animal Farm is the latest directorial project from Andy Serkis, known for his iconic roles in franchises like Planet of the Apes. This animated adaptation of George Orwell’s 1945 novella has debuted to largely negative critical reception, despite its strong voice cast and a beloved source material that has long been regarded as a powerful allegory on authoritarianism and revolution.
Andy Serkis began his directing career with films such as Breathe, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. He is also attached to direct and star in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, scheduled for release in 2027. However, his latest effort, Animal Farm, has encountered a rocky start with critics who feel it fails to capture the essence of Orwell’s work.
Animal Farm by George Orwell is a dystopian novella that serves as an allegory for the Russian Revolution, illustrating how a movement founded on ideals of equality can devolve into a new dictatorship. Unfortunately, the film adaptation has been criticized for missing this core message and instead opting for a more family-friendly approach that dilutes the political commentary.
Currently, Animal Farm holds a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 critic reviews, reflecting a largely unfavorable consensus. Critics point out that the film neither succeeds as a faithful adaptation nor as a standalone movie. Its humor has been described as cringeworthy and its plot mechanics overly simplified, which undermines the serious themes of the source material.
In ScreenRant’s review, Liz Declan states that instead of providing a thoughtful critique of authoritarianism or exploring how dictators rise to power, the film resorts to the "laziest road" by bluntly stating that absolute power corrupts absolutely. She further notes that this point is "painfully on the nose" and "completely unearned," with the movie failing to actually demonstrate this critical theme.
Jacob Oller of AV Club was even more critical, suggesting that the film’s creative deficiencies can be summed up by a single opening song. He writes that rather than reviewing the entire film, focusing on this sequence reveals the film’s failure to honor Orwell’s legacy. The scene in question features the animal characters revolting against their human owners with a rap song titled "Break Down the Barn," performed by Pigeon John. This choice was seen as jarring and out of sync with the novella’s darker tone.
In Orwell’s original story, after the animals take over the farm and rename it Animal Farm, the leaders gradually adopt human behaviors, declare themselves "more equal than others," and enforce their rule with violence. The film’s departure into a more family-friendly and humorous tone has been viewed as a significant dilution of these themes.
Despite its flaws, the film boasts a prestigious voice cast, including Seth Rogen, Woody Harrelson, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, and Laverne Cox. Andy Serkis himself also contributes to the voice cast, adding to the star power that could, in theory, attract audiences despite the critical backlash.
While the strong ensemble and family-friendly elements might help the film perform reasonably at the box office, it faces significant hurdles due to its poor critical reception and the disappointment of fans expecting a more faithful and meaningful adaptation of Orwell’s work.
Animal Farm is scheduled for theatrical release on May 1, 2026, and it remains to be seen if audiences will respond more favorably than critics. For now, the film’s initial reviews suggest it struggles to live up to the legacy of the original novella and the expectations surrounding Andy Serkis’s directorial efforts.
