AceShowbiz - Euphoria returns for its third season with escalating tensions between deadly rivals, entangling Rue in a dangerous drug war. Comedian and actor Martha Kelly, who earned her first Emmy nomination for her chilling portrayal of the drug dealer Laurie last season, reprises her role in season three, bringing new chaos to the series’ intense narrative.
Kelly’s character Laurie, who once held Rue hostage as a teenager, reappears after a five-year time jump. Laurie attempts to rope Rue back into her world by “offering” her a job to work off a drug debt. However, Rue escapes once again, this time seeking refuge with Alamo Brown, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who is portrayed as a rival drug lord. The power struggle between Laurie and Alamo sets the stage for much of the season’s conflict.
Despite her pivotal role, Kelly admits she only has insight into the scenes she films and remains largely unaware of the full scope of the season's storyline. “I don’t know a lot of what happens this season because I only saw my own scenes,” she reveals, highlighting how much of the show’s drama unfolds beyond her character’s immediate perspective.
Kelly, known for her debut in Zach Galifianakis’s Baskets, shares that joining the cast of Euphoria was initially intimidating due to the high caliber of talent and the show's intense atmosphere. Season two’s heavy and disturbing material left her emotionally drained, but season three offers a shift. The new season was filmed on location rather than a soundstage, and while Laurie remains a dangerous villain, the tone surrounding her character includes more dark humor and situational comedy, giving Kelly a slightly lighter experience on set.
The second episode of this season vividly initiates the escalating conflict between Laurie and Alamo. Laurie insults Alamo with a provocative phone call, calling him a “fucking pig,” which prompts him to retaliate by sending a literal, defecating pig to her home. This bizarre and unsettling gesture sets the tone for the violent and bizarre rivalry brewing between the two drug dealers, with Rue trapped in the middle of their war.
Kelly also reflects on the changes in her character, noting that Laurie is not a savvy businesswoman. She makes poor decisions, such as entrusting a suitcase full of drugs to a teenager and then losing control of that situation when Rue escapes. This flawed and chaotic side of Laurie adds layers to her villainy, making her more unpredictable in the current season.
On the lighter side, Kelly recalls a moment from the season premiere that made her laugh despite the dark themes. She jokes about the enormous amount of money Rue owes Laurie, which she initially thought was a joke but later learned was accurate when factoring in the exorbitant interest rates Laurie charges.
Discussing Rue’s storyline, Kelly admits surprise at some of the plot developments she was unaware of before filming, including Rue driving over a wall in Mexico and the dangers she faced smuggling drugs with Faye.
Still, she was initially anxious about audience reactions, anticipating that fans might strongly dislike her character due to Laurie’s predatory actions, especially given the young and passionate fanbase of Euphoria.
