AceShowbiz - The mystery surrounding the release of Grandgear, the upcoming film by acclaimed Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki, has finally been unveiled. Sony Pictures announced on Monday night during CinemaCon in Las Vegas that the film is scheduled to debut in theaters on February 18, 2028.
Grandgear marks Takashi Yamazaki’s first English-language feature and is a collaboration with producer J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company. The project attracted significant attention in late 2024, sparking a competitive bidding war among studios eager to secure the film’s rights.
This announcement came at CinemaCon, an annual event that brings together theater operators and Hollywood studios to promote major upcoming releases, including prominent summer and event films slated for 2026 and beyond.
Previously, Yamazaki gained international acclaim with Godzilla Minus One, which became a surprise box office hit. The film grossed an impressive $113 million worldwide on a modest $15 million budget. It achieved several milestones, including becoming the first movie in the extensive Godzilla franchise to win an Academy Award, securing the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Additionally, it became the highest-grossing Japanese film in North America, not adjusted for inflation.
Takashi Yamazaki is also set to release another entry in the Godzilla series titled Godzilla Minus Zero. This film is scheduled to premiere in Japan on November 3, followed shortly by a U.S. release managed by GKids.
During his Oscars acceptance speech for the visual effects award, Yamazaki reflected on the journey from Japan to Hollywood recognition, saying, "So far from Hollywood, even the possibility of standing on this stage seemed out of reach. The moment we were nominated, we felt like Rocky Balboa welcomed into the ring as equals by our biggest rivals, which was already a miracle. But, here we stand!"
For Grandgear, Takashi Yamazaki is both writing and directing the film under the Columbia Pictures banner. Alongside producer J.J. Abrams, Glen Zipper from Bad Robot is also producing the project, signaling a high-profile collaboration that fans and industry insiders are eagerly anticipating.
With its confirmed release date and the involvement of such notable talents, Grandgear is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated cinematic events of the late 2020s.
