AceShowbiz - Kanye West has recently seen the value of his teenage art collection skyrocket from an initial $23,000 appraisal to an astonishing $3.1 million after a thorough reassessment by a professional appraiser.
The collection, consisting of five pieces created by Kanye West as a teenager while attending Polaris School in Chicago, was first appraised on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow in 2020. At that time, appraiser Laura Woolley estimated the value to be between $16,000 and $23,000.
However, the story took a dramatic turn when art collector and DC-based entrepreneur and lawyer Vinoda Basnayake decided the initial valuation did not do justice to the works. In late 2025, Basnayake commissioned a new appraisal following the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), which revealed the collection’s true worth.
One standout piece is a drawing of West’s late mother, Donda West, created around 1995, which alone is now valued at $335,000. The new appraisal highlighted a critical oversight in the original valuation: the initial assessment had treated the artwork as typical celebrity art, which generally does not command high prices, rather than recognizing it as an early chapter in the creative journey of a future multi-talented star.
Basnayake’s pursuit of the collection began after spotting the artwork on Antiques Roadshow. Determined to acquire the pieces, he spent months investigating and tracking down the original owners. The show's refusal to share contact details forced Basnayake into extensive detective work, which led him to connect with Kanye West’s cousin and her husband, the current holders of the art after inheriting it following Donda West’s passing in 2007.
Initially reluctant to sell, the couple changed their minds within a week after recognizing Basnayake’s serious intent. Although the sale price remains confidential due to a non-disclosure agreement, the dramatic increase in the collection’s valuation underscores its newfound significance.
This development comes amid Kanye West’s ongoing controversies, which have impacted his ability to perform and tour. Notably, the UK's Wireless Festival was canceled after several sponsors withdrew over his headliner status, and the British government denied him entry into the country.
Despite these setbacks, Kanye West continues to receive support from influential artists such as Dave Chappelle and Erykah Badu, who have appeared at his recent sold-out concerts. Their presence highlights his sustained impact and influence within hip-hop culture, regardless of current challenges.
