AceShowbiz - As CinemaCon 2026 unfolds, exhibitors eagerly seek more details from David Ellison about the ambitious plan involving Paramount and Warner Bros to produce 30 films annually. This development has captured significant attention amid a revitalized theatrical market.
The industry's outlook has shifted dramatically compared to last year when concerns about the future of theatrical releases loomed large. Early 2025 saw a sluggish domestic box office, trailing 11% behind the previous year. This was before the unexpected surge sparked by A Minecraft Movie, which transformed the marketplace with near $1 billion in global box office revenue, fueled by strong advance ticket sales.
Currently in 2026, the domestic box office has reached $2.26 billion, marking the first time since 2019 that such figures have been achieved. This represents a 23% increase compared to the same January 1 to April 12 period last year, according to Comscore data. The number of wide releases—films opening in more than 1,000 theaters—has also grown, with 162 releases last year surpassing pre-pandemic numbers like 2019’s 138 wide releases.
Audience turnout is on the rise as well. Admission numbers have climbed to 154 million, a 16% increase over last year, based on data from EntTelligence. This resurgence of moviegoers adds further weight to the anticipation surrounding the Paramount and Warner Bros collaboration, as industry insiders await more information on how this merger could reshape the theatrical landscape.
