AceShowbiz - Erik Per Sullivan, known for his role as Dewey in Malcolm in the Middle, will not be returning for the upcoming reboot Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair. Despite the production offering him significant financial incentives, Sullivan chose to step away from acting and pursue academic interests instead.

The reboot, set to premiere on April 10, 2026, features most of the original cast reprising their roles, except for Sullivan. His part as Dewey has been recast with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark. Jane Kaczmarek, who returns as Lois, explained that Sullivan is deeply focused on his studies, particularly on the works of Dickens, and declined the offer despite being presented with "buckets of money."

After retiring from acting, Erik Per Sullivan has kept a low profile, dedicating his time to academics rather than the entertainment industry. His decision aligns with statements from former co-star Bryan Cranston, who revealed during a June 2025 podcast episode of "Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade" that Sullivan is currently pursuing a master's degree at Harvard.

Cranston noted that Sullivan has not acted since he was a child and is focused on his new path. He quoted Sullivan's reaction to the reboot invitation as, "Oh, God no. I haven't acted since I was 9 or something, so I'm not into it." Despite declining the role, Sullivan reportedly thinks it’s "fantastic" that the show is getting a new life.

During his time on Malcolm in the Middle, Erik Per Sullivan also appeared in several films and shows such as The Cider House Rules, Unfaithful, and Christmas With the Kranks. However, his career shifted away from acting towards education, which explains why he is the only original cast member not returning for the reboot.

The reboot aims to capture early 2000s nostalgia, but Sullivan’s absence highlights his commitment to a different lifestyle outside Hollywood. Fans will see a new face as Dewey, while the rest of the familiar cast returns to continue the story nearly two decades later.
