AceShowbiz - Manon Bannerman, the lead singer of the girl group Katseye, recently shared insights into the challenges the band faced with internal disagreements prior to her announced hiatus. In a detailed interview published by Nylon on April 7, Manon discussed how navigating differences within a six-member group required strong communication and mutual respect.
“Being in a group, it’s just about good communication and setting good boundaries and building a friendship, but also a work relationship, and always remembering that it’s a shared goal that we have,” Manon, 23, explained. She emphasized the importance of balancing personal dynamics and professional objectives, noting that disagreements are natural in a large group.
As an example, she pointed to photo shoots, where conflicts might arise over something as simple as wardrobe choices. “There’s six of us, so obviously not everyone’s always going to be on the same page about everything,” she said. “But I think we all are at, or have been learning and are finally coming to, a point where for the group’s sake, you give and you take. You pick your battles.”
Manon also spoke about the emotional support system within the group, highlighting the need to rely on each other as they cope with the pressures of fame. “We have to lean on each other,” she said, adding that supportive friends, family, and therapy also play vital roles in keeping them grounded and humble.
The interview took place before Manon’s announcement to pause her activities with Katseye. The group declined to provide further comments on her hiatus. However, fellow member Sophia Laforteza offered insight into the band’s decision-making process, describing it as more nuanced than a simple majority vote.
“We’ve learned that if even just one person doesn’t feel good about a certain thing, we need to heavily consider and communicate about it — because it’s not about the majority enjoying it and just having the people who don’t enjoy it adjust,” Sophia, also 23, shared. “If we don’t feel comfortable, we don’t feel passionate. We don’t feel good about something. We need to help that person see another perspective or adjust everything overall because it really is hard to perform a song if you don’t enjoy it.”
She further noted the significance of solidarity within the group: “We’re only as strong as our weakest member. We need to make sure that we’re all showing up for each other and all going at the same pace. We cannot leave anybody behind.”
On February 20, Katseye announced that Manon would be taking a temporary hiatus to focus on her health and well-being. The group’s statement, shared on their Weverse platform, expressed full support for her decision and confirmed that the other members would continue scheduled activities during this period.
The statement read, “After open and thoughtful conversations together, we are sharing that Manon will be taking a temporary hiatus from group activities to focus on her health and well-being. We fully support this decision. Katseye remains committed to showing up for one another and for the fans who mean everything to us. The group will continue scheduled activities during this time, and we look forward to being together again when the time is right.”
The message ended with gratitude toward their fanbase, known as Eyekons, thanking them for their “continued love, patience and understanding.”
Manon also issued a personal statement via Weverse, reassuring fans about her condition. “I am healthy and taking care of myself,” she wrote. “Sometimes things unfold in ways we don’t fully control, but I’m trusting the bigger picture. Thank you for standing by me. I love you endlessly and can’t wait to see you again.”
In the following month, Manon updated fans with another message expressing her gratitude for their unwavering support. She noted that the group’s management was engaged in “positive conversations” regarding her potential return. “I’m happy, and I’m healthy. I’ll share more soon,” she added. “Thank you for always being there for me.”
Despite these hopeful remarks, an insider later revealed to Us Weekly that Manon, who had recently removed “Katseye” from her Instagram bio, was not expected to return to the group. Both Manon and the group's representatives were contacted for comment but did not provide further statements.
Katseye is scheduled to perform at Coachella on Friday, April 10, though it remains uncertain whether Manon will join the rest of the band on stage.
This development follows a broader pattern seen in the music industry, where artists sometimes take breaks or leave groups to prioritize personal well-being or pursue solo ventures. High-profile examples include Zayn Malik’s departure from One Direction in 2015 to launch a solo career, illustrating the complex dynamics that can exist within music groups.
As fans await further updates, the current status of Katseye and Manon’s role within the band remains a subject of keen interest. The group continues to engage with supporters while navigating this transitional phase, emphasizing their commitment to both their music and their community.
