AceShowbiz - Apple TV+ is reportedly working on a fresh adaptation of the satirical film The Bonfire of the Vanities, which originally debuted in 1990. The new project is being developed by acclaimed producer David E. Kelley, who is set to write and executive produce the series alongside Sarah Geismer and director Matt Reeves. This collaboration is taking place in partnership with Warner Bros. Television.
The original The Bonfire of the Vanities movie featured a prominent cast including Tom Hanks as Sherman McCoy, Bruce Willis as Peter Fallow, Morgan Freeman as Judge Leonard White, Melanie Griffith as Maria Ruskin, and Kim Cattrall as Judy McCoy. The film is a satire based on Tom Wolfe’s 1987 bestselling novel of the same name.
The story centers on Sherman McCoy, a bond trader whose life spirals out of control after his mistress, Maria, is involved in a hit-and-run accident with his car. The incident quickly becomes a media sensation, leading to a public frenzy that threatens to destroy Sherman’s carefully maintained reputation as he faces legal consequences in court.
According to insiders cited by Variety, Kelley will be the primary writer for the adaptation and will oversee the project as an executive producer. Matt Reeves, known for directing major films such as Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, War for the Planet of the Apes, and The Batman, is attached to direct and produce the series. The partnership between Apple TV+ and Warner Bros. Television signals a high-profile reboot of the story.
At the time of this announcement, many details about the new series remain under wraps. Information about the cast, specific storyline adaptations, and the release date have not yet been revealed. Apple TV+ representatives have declined to comment publicly on the project, maintaining a level of secrecy around the production.
David E. Kelley has a strong relationship with Apple TV+, having developed and produced several successful series for the platform. His previous work includes the legal thriller Presumed Innocent, which has been renewed for a second season, as well as Margo’s Got Money Troubles, scheduled to premiere on April 15, 2026. Kelley’s extensive experience includes writing and producing acclaimed shows for other streaming services such as Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, HBO’s Big Little Lies, and Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers.
Matt Reeves also brings a wealth of experience in both film and television. Beyond his blockbuster movies, he has produced several critically acclaimed TV series, including The Penguin, Tales from the Loop, and Away. His involvement lends significant creative weight to the upcoming adaptation of The Bonfire of the Vanities.
The original 1990 film, directed by Brian De Palma with a screenplay by Michael Cristofer, remains a satirical take on society and media frenzy. The movie runs for 125 minutes.
