AceShowbiz - Co-creator Michael Patrick King has shared his perspective on the HBO Max series And Just Like That, the follow-up to the iconic Sex and the City. While the show may not have been universally embraced at first, King believes it has the potential to be better appreciated as time goes on.
In an interview with The Guardian, King reflected on how perceptions of television series can evolve. He cited his experience with The Comeback, explaining that initial reactions often shift as cultural contexts change. "If The Comeback has taught me anything, it's that perceptions can change over the years," King said. "The Comeback's first perception was: it failed. Then it grew in relevance as the world caught up."
King expressed optimism that And Just Like That will follow a similar trajectory. He highlighted that the series carries the same foundational themes as the original Sex and the City. The original series reflected societal expectations of 35-year-old women being married, whereas And Just Like That explores the societal norms faced by 55-year-old women, such as the idea that they shouldn’t wear tulle.
King emphasized his ongoing interest in exploring the tension between the individual and society through his writing. This thematic continuity, he suggests, might help And Just Like That resonate more strongly with audiences in the future.
The three-season series continues to develop its narrative around mature women navigating contemporary social expectations, and King is hopeful that it will eventually earn a cult following and critical reassessment.
