AceShowbiz - The highly anticipated conclusion to the modern sci-fi trilogy is set to arrive this December with the release of Dune: Part Three. On December 18, fans will witness the return of Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, and Chani, portrayed by Zendaya, as director Denis Villeneuve brings Frank Herbert’s epic saga to a close. Earlier this month, the film’s trailer debuted, quickly amassing over 35 million views on YouTube, signaling strong excitement for the final installment.
Despite Dune: Part Three marking the end of this cinematic trilogy, the Dune universe is far from finished. The franchise has expanded notably since Villeneuve’s initial adaptation, particularly on the small screen. In 2024, HBO launched Dune: Prophecy, a television series set 10,000 years before the events depicted in the movies. The show explores the rich lore of the Dune cosmos and has already been confirmed for a second season after just a few weeks on air.
Production for the sophomore season recently wrapped up, but questions remain about the long-term future of Dune on television. HBO’s chief executive, Casey Bloys, recently addressed these prospects in an interview. He noted the potential for a variety of related projects, including prequels and sequels, but also emphasized the challenges that come with developing content based on existing intellectual properties.
"I think with all of these properties, you could see... I mean, putting aside that there are various constraints about what you can and can't do, show-by-show... but I think with any show, you can imagine various prequels, sequels, whatever," Bloys explained. Nevertheless, he pointed out that success is never guaranteed solely because a property has a devoted fan base or strong initial viewership. "There's no guarantees to it at all. So [IP is] a nice thing to have, but you still have to develop. You still have to go through development and find shows that are worthy of investing your time and money in."
The first season of Dune: Prophecy features a talented cast including Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen, Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen, Chloe Lea as Sister Lila, and Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart. Created and showrun by Alison Schapker, the series has been praised for strong performances but has been compared less favorably to the ambitious scale and visual grandeur of Villeneuve's films.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 of Dune: Prophecy received a moderate 65% average score from critics. The consensus reads, "Grounded by reliably terrific performances from Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, Dune: Prophecy lacks the spice of Denis Villeneuve's films but compensates with addictively perilous palace intrigue." This reflects the show’s focus on political drama within the Dune universe rather than the sweeping sci-fi spectacle of the movies.

The first season of Dune: Prophecy is currently available to stream on HBO Max, setting the stage for its upcoming second season and future developments.
As December approaches, anticipation for the final chapter in the movie trilogy continues to grow, but the evolving TV series and potential for further spin-offs suggest that the Dune saga will remain a significant presence in science fiction entertainment for years to come.
