J. Cole breaks his decade-long silence, confirming the 2013 VMA after-party fight with Diddy and explaining why he stayed quiet.

For years, rumors of the clash circulated within the music community and fan circles, but the story remained unconfirmed—until now. Speaking candidly on Cam'ron’s Talk With Flee platform, J. Cole confirmed that the confrontation did indeed happen, breaking his silence about the incident for the first time.
According to J. Cole, his decision to stay quiet about the fight for so long was rooted in timing and respect. He explained, "I was gonna put it out because me & Puff were cool, we were in a good spot, but when everything happened, I'm like, nah, I don't wanna give the world more ammo."
The phrase "everything happened" refers to the legal troubles that later involved Diddy. J. Cole noted that once Diddy’s legal issues became public, he chose not to share the story to avoid complicating matters further.
The origin of the conflict reportedly stemmed from the competitive nature of hip-hop. Punch, president of TDE, recounted his eyewitness account during a 2022 appearance on Math Hoffa’s My Expert Opinion podcast. Punch explained that the tension began over a discussion about Kendrick Lamar’s famous verse on Jay Electronica’s "Control," a verse known for its bold claim of Kendrick being the King of New York and its sharp lyrical shots across the genre.
“Jay-Z and Puff are doing the dinner that they usually do. This whole thing was packed like 70-30 celebrities,” Punch said. “Puff and Cole were talking about the verse, and they ended up getting into a little back and forth. When we came in, Cole and Kendrick were talking about...the verse. Puff came back over, and the argument sparked up again. So from there they ended up getting in the whole scuffle in the club.”
Today, the story is viewed in a new light, especially given Diddy’s 2025 conviction, which will result in him being in the bing for a couple of years. This development adds further complexity to the long-held rumors surrounding the 2013 incident.
