AceShowbiz - Timothée Chalamet recently sparked a reaction from the opera and ballet communities after expressing skepticism about the future of these art forms. Following his comment that "no one cares" about opera or ballet anymore, several institutions extended invitations to him in hopes of changing his mind.
The English National Opera (ENO) reached out to Chalamet via Instagram with an official invitation to attend a performance. Their message included a free ticket offer and a hopeful note: "Let’s see if we can change your mind." Similarly, the Royal Ballet and Opera extended an open invitation, telling Chalamet, "If you’d like to reconsider, @tchalamet, our doors are open."
Meanwhile, the Seattle Opera promoted discounted tickets available to all interested attendees, including the actor. The Metropolitan Opera took a different approach by spotlighting the entire team behind their productions, from performers to behind-the-scenes crew, rather than offering tickets.
Chalamet had shared his thoughts on the state of arts in an interview with Matthew McConaughey last month. He explained that while he does not want the theatrical movie-going experience to struggle, he is wary of trying to keep certain art forms alive when he believes the audience interest is declining. "I don’t want to be working in ballet, or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though, like, no one cares about this anymore.’ All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there," he said. He also humorously noted, "I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason."
His remarks have drawn criticism from many within the opera and ballet communities, as well as supporters of these art forms, who questioned why an artist would publicly express negativity toward the arts. The irony has been noted by some given Chalamet stars in a film about a man passionate about a niche art.
Despite the invitations, Chalamet has yet to attend any opera or ballet performances. He is currently in Japan, taking part in game shows and enjoying local cuisine, with fans hoping his next stop might include a visit to the New National Theatre in Tokyo.
