AceShowbiz - While the long-promised Sherlock Holmes 3 remains stuck in development hell, director Guy Ritchie has delivered a new take on the iconic detective. His latest project, the series Young Sherlock, has become a success on Prime Video since its debut, ruling the streamer's viewership charts both domestically and internationally. This marks Ritchie's first return to the Sherlock Holmes universe in 15 years, following his two blockbuster films starring Robert Downey Jr.
The original film franchise began in 2009 with a subversive first movie and continued with 2011's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Both films earned a combined global box office total of more than $1 billion. However, the third installment has faced numerous hurdles.
Not one to wait indefinitely, Guy Ritchie has moved forward with a fresh interpretation. Young Sherlock is an action-packed mystery series that portrays the legendary British detective as a university student. Based on the book series by Andrew Lane, which was itself inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories, the show leverages the character's public domain status to offer another inventive interpretation.
Ritchie's version is clearly resonating with the streaming audience. According to industry tracker FlixPatrol, Young Sherlock is the number one title on Prime Video across the world. The eight-episode series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the titular role and features a supporting cast that includes Natascha McElhone, Joseph Fiennes, Dónal Finn, Max Irons, and Colin Firth. The show has also garnered critical acclaim, holding a "Certified Fresh" 85% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
In her review for Collider, Therese Lacson described the series as being "full of action, mystery, and gumption."
