The 16-year-old actress, set to portray the newest slayer in the iconic vampire-fighting saga, expressed her disappointment and gratitude in the wake of the news.

Following the announcement by original Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar that Hulu chose not to proceed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, Armstrong shared a glimpse of her character on Instagram. The photo depicted the fresh face of Sunnydale’s protector, captioned simply, “Your slayer.” Gellar responded warmly with heart emojis, while fans voiced their sadness over the show's cancellation.

In a heartfelt Instagram Story message, Armstrong addressed the situation directly. “I'm sure many of you have already heard the news by now,” she began, acknowledging the disappointment. She then thanked fans for their support throughout the months leading up to the pilot’s filming. “It's been really special,” she added, emphasizing her pride in the work they accomplished.

Armstrong continued, “I'm really proud of what we did. I'm sad that you guys won't be able to see it, but it doesn't take away from the amazing experience that I had.” The actress also took the opportunity to express her gratitude to several key figures involved in the project, including Gellar, the pilot’s director Chloé Zhao, and producers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman.

“I also want to say thank you to all of the fans and all of the people that believed in this new chapter and that believed in me,” Armstrong said emotionally. “We brought this back for you guys, and Buffy is such a big part of all of our lives, and it's not going anywhere. So who knows what the future will hold.”

On the same day, Sarah Michelle Gellar made the official announcement that Hulu decided not to move forward with the revival after filming the pilot, which was directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao, known for Nomadland and Hamnet. Gellar, who rose to fame as Buffy in the original 1990s series, expressed her sadness but also her appreciation for Zhao’s involvement.

“I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy's stylish yet affordable boots, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded of how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you,” Gellar shared. She assured fans that her affection for the character and the franchise remains unchanged despite the cancellation. “I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me,” she added lightheartedly.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Hulu is still interested in the Buffy franchise and is exploring alternative ways to continue the story, despite the setback with the current revival.

Originally created by Joss Whedon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer captivated audiences for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003. The show chronicled a teenager’s battle against vampires, demons, and supernatural threats while navigating the complexities of adolescence in the fictional town of Sunnydale. The series also spawned the successful spinoff Angel, which aired for five seasons.

It is worth noting that Whedon was not involved in the new revival, following accusations in 2021 from former cast members regarding “hostile and toxic work environments” on both Buffy and Angel.

Gellar recently revealed that joining the revival was initially a difficult decision. She changed her mind after an inspiring and enthusiastic conversation with Chloé Zhao, which helped her fully understand the vision behind the new series.

“I have always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit Buffy and her world,” Gellar said. “But it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right.”

Though the Hulu revival has been shelved, the passion of the cast, creators, and fans suggests that the legacy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains strong, with the possibility of future projects still on the horizon.
