Pixar's Hoppers delivers a massive box office win, marking the studio's strongest original film opening in years and revitalizing its storytelling magic.

AceShowbiz - Hoppers has marked a significant resurgence for Pixar at the box office, delivering the studio's strongest original film opening in years. After a series of underperforming releases, including Elio and Lightyear, and a modest success with Elemental, the new release has revitalized confidence in Pixar's original storytelling.
While Inside Out 2 previously dominated with $1.7 billion in worldwide gross, many of Pixar's original films struggled to reach similar heights. Early projections estimated that Hoppers would open domestically between $35 and $40 million, a promising sign compared to recent originals. However, the film exceeded expectations by a wide margin, earning $46 million domestically and $42 million internationally during its opening weekend for a total of $88 million worldwide, according to Deadline.
This opening marks the best global debut for a Pixar original since Coco launched with $104.7 million in 2017. It also surpasses the worldwide openings of Onward at $65.6 million and Elemental at $65.1 million. Although Onward premiered just before pandemic lockdowns, which affected its box office potential, Hoppers outperformed that film as well as Elio and Lightyear, highlighting a strong rebound for Pixar originals.
The success of Hoppers is particularly notable because it did not rely on a holiday release window, instead opening on March 6, 2026. This achievement may encourage Pixar to continue investing in original projects by creator Gatto and others, potentially increasing greenlights for fresh stories rather than predominantly sequels.
Financially, Hoppers is on track to recoup its reported $150 million production budget, buoyed by both its box office performance and strong critical reception. The film holds an impressive 94% approval rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, being praised as Pixar's best film since Coco. ScreenRant's Gregory Nussen lauded the movie as “a welcome return to a time of yore, when kids were trusted to pick up on important themes - all while laughing their heads off.”
Beyond the success of Hoppers, Pixar's slate remains filled with highly anticipated sequels. Toy Story 5 is scheduled for release on June 19, 2027, followed by Incredibles 3 in 2028 and Coco 2 in 2029. Additionally, a third installment of Monsters Inc. is reportedly in development, ensuring that Pixar continues to balance original storytelling with franchise installments.
Hoppers runs 105 minutes and is directed by Daniel Chong, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jesse Andrews. The film features voice performances by Piper Curda as Mabel Tanaka / Mabel Beaver. Produced by Nicole Paradis Grindle, the movie’s strong opening weekend and critical acclaim suggest a bright future for Pixar’s original films.
