AceShowbiz - Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for their work on Scream (2022) and Scream 6 (2023), recently shared insights about the upcoming The Mummy 4. They described the new installment as "really, really beautiful and scary and sweeping," highlighting its exciting and ambitious scope.
The film will reunite Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as Rick and Evelyn O'Connell, reprising their roles from the original 1999 movie and its 2001 sequel. The directors emphasized that both actors would only come back if they loved the script, which the filmmakers praised for its strong emotional core and compelling characters.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett revealed that it was their longtime producer William Sherrick who brought them onboard for The Mummy 4. While working on their vampire film Abigail, Sherrick informed them he was trying to secure the directing roles for the new Mummy project. Initially, the duo was skeptical.
As they wrapped Abigail, they began collaborating with writer Dave Coggeshall to develop a pitch for the sequel. Gillett remarked that despite the excitement, they remained cautious, knowing that many projects never materialize. "Nothing is real until it’s very, very real," he said.
The script by Coggeshall impressed the directors with its heartfelt storytelling and well-developed characters. Bettinelli-Olpin stated it contains "all of the heart and the character that you could hope for." Gillett added that both Fraser and Weisz were unlikely to participate unless they truly loved the script.
Last year, Brendan Fraser shared with the Associated Press that he had been waiting two decades for the chance to make the next chapter in the franchise. He reflected on The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor as a unique experience, but indicated that the story he’s eager to tell is still forthcoming. "Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want," Fraser said.
The Mummy 4 is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on May 19, 2028, from Universal Pictures.
