AceShowbiz - Shane MacGowan, the iconic singer-songwriter and frontman of The Pogues, is being honored through a new tribute album titled 20th Century Paddy - The Songs of Shane MacGowan. This compilation celebrates the enduring legacy of the late artist, who passed away on November 30, 2023, at the age of 65.
The album, announced on March 12, features an impressive lineup of contributors, including Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Damien Dempsey, David Gray, Dropkick Murphys, Hozier, and actor-musician Johnny Depp. The first single released from the collection is Springsteen's reimagined version of MacGowan’s classic "A Rainy Night in Soho," now available for streaming.
Bruce Springsteen reflected on the late artist’s impact as the song debuted on streaming platforms, describing MacGowan as "all naked bottomless humanity," challenging listeners to live authentically. He praised MacGowan’s raw, unfiltered style and profound soul, recognizing the unique blend of humor, depth, and rebellious spirit that characterized his work.
Shane MacGowan remains remembered for his vivid storytelling, which offered a gritty, unvarnished view of life. His lyrics often explored the struggles and hopes of working-class Irish immigrants, portraying love and hardship within a rough urban landscape. Born on Christmas Day 1957 in Kent, England, to Irish parents, he rose to prominence within London’s punk scene before founding The Pogues in the early 1980s.
The Pogues' distinctive sound fused Celtic folk traditions with punk energy, setting them apart from the dominant New Wave and synth-pop acts of the time. Their raucous, alcohol-infused live performances quickly earned them a devoted following. Among their enduring contributions is the beloved holiday song "Fairytale of New York," released in 1987, which remains a seasonal staple in the UK and Ireland despite never topping the charts, peaking instead at No. 2.
In 2018, MacGowan received the Ivors Inspiration Award at the Ivor Novello Awards, recognizing his poetic songwriting and lasting influence on generations of musicians. His passing came shortly before the Christmas season, a poignant time given the annual popularity of "Fairytale of New York."
The tribute album was a project deeply supported by MacGowan's longtime partner, Irish journalist Victoria Mary Clarke, who played a key role in bringing the collection to life. She expressed gratitude for the artists involved, Rubyworks—the label releasing the album—and producer John Kennedy, emphasizing how the album exalts Shane’s spirit and songwriting through unique and heartfelt interpretations.
Niall Muckian, founder of Rubyworks, highlighted the significance of preserving MacGowan’s poetic voice, noting the privilege of offering a platform for his work to reach new audiences worldwide. The album is set for release on November 13 and is currently available for pre-order. A limited edition "Deluxe Bookpack" will include 3LPs, 2CDs, and a 56-page book filled with memorabilia and liner notes.
Importantly, 50% of the artist royalties from 20th Century Paddy will be donated to Dublin Simon Community, a charity dedicated to providing housing and healthcare for people experiencing homelessness. Catherine Kenny, CEO of the charity, underscored MacGowan’s well-known empathy for those sleeping rough in Dublin, recalling his willingness to stop and share moments with people on the streets.
MacGowan was a longtime supporter of Dublin Simon Community and gave his final live performance at their Christmas Eve Busk in 2021. Since then, his songs have been regularly played in tribute at the event each year.
Representatives for the project have stated that the tribute album reflects a work MacGowan had always wanted to create himself. More contributing artists are expected to be announced in the coming months.
Fans can currently stream Bruce Springsteen’s rendition of "A Rainy Night in Soho" and look forward to the full album, which promises to honor the memory and artistic achievements of Shane MacGowan through a diverse and passionate group of musicians.
