AceShowbiz - Game of Thrones star Kit Harington has expressed his frustration with a segment of the fanbase that desires a redo of the series' final season. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Harington, known for his role as Jon Snow, revealed his discontent upon discovering that over a million fans had signed a petition calling for the eighth season to be rewritten "with competent writers."
“That genuinely angered me,” Harington stated, emphasizing his awareness of the extensive effort that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss invested in crafting the final season. “Like, how dare you? Sorry, that's just how I feel. I think it was a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media,” he continued. This reaction is particularly poignant given that Harington was in a rehab facility for stress and exhaustion during the airing of the series finale in May 2019, and only learned of the backlash after leaving rehab. He admitted to being “shocked by the negative response.”
The petition, which called for a remake of the final season, even reached the desk of HBO's chief, Casey Bloys. However, he dismissed the idea, stating, “The petition shows a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the show, but it wasn't something we seriously considered.”
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones, Harington imposed a personal rule on his future projects, insisting on a strict “no swords” policy. Nonetheless, he initially entertained the possibility of reprising his role in a planned spin-off series. Author George R.R. Martin disclosed in 2022 that Harington was interested in the project. However, two years later, Harington confirmed that the spin-off was “firmly on the shelf.”
In explaining his decision, Harington stated, “Nothing got us excited enough” during the development phase. He concluded, “If we push this any further and keep developing it, we could end up with something that's not good. And that's the last thing we all want.”
Currently, Harington is back on HBO, portraying tech CEO Henry Muck in the UK finance drama Industry, which is now airing its fourth season on Sundays at 9 PM.
